CSC165 - WEEK 12

The last week of the CSC165,i can't believe that this course has actually ended.

In the lectures this week we worked on computability and induction which frankly i found really hard.for me, the best lecture was the last lecture in which we did the problem solving worksheet.I always love doing these as they force you to think logically, even though i was not able to solve it without looking at the hint in the end;still it was fun.I used the first hint and found that the formula is "rows+columns-2".I'm not sure whether its correct or not which is why i'll go to the office hours on Monday.

I've been working on A3 with my teammates since its due on December 2 i.e Monday. We've done most of the questions now except for the last one,for which we all are meeting tonight.Out of all the assignments so far i found A3 the most difficult of them all.

Now i'm very much worried about the exams since getting a high score in the final exams will make me one step closer towards getting into the program.CSC165 as a course was hard and challenging for me but i learned totally new things , something which i've never done before.I learned a completely new type of math.

Above all i liked this course and i want to thank my Professor Danny Heap for teaching us this course so effectively and also i would like to thank my TA Madina Ibrayeva who helped me a lot in understanding everything in this course.

CSC165 - WEEK 11

Monday and Tuesday of this week were holidays due to the full break and i studied as much as could and made the most out of the break.Because of the break we had no tutorial this week and thus no quiz and neither got our quiz's from previous week back.

In the lectures we learned a bit more in depth about the big-oh,big-omega and big-theta and above all assignment 3 was posted which was really hard for me because i haven't done the concept of limits yet .I'm looking forward to work on A3 with my teammates and discussing things out with them and also learning the concept of limits.

CSC 165 - WEEK 10

This week we got our midterms back,i'm very much disappointed by my marks.the reason for that is that i was expecting my marks to be really high since i knew every part of the proofs and practiced  a lot.In the test i made the most silly mistakes one could ever think of.i'm very angry upon myself at this time.Never mind i still have the final exam to score more .

Unfortunately in the lectures as well,i'm a little behind and i have to read course notes and go through the slides to catch up on the material. Until now the material was ok ,it wasn't that hard but now it seems to be getting really hard for me.

In the tutorial i got my quiz back and i got  1.5/2 which is decent but if i want to get into the program i have to score really good in everything.I'm having a little bit of problem in counting the number of steps in a function, but i asked my TA and now i think i'm confident about counting them. The quiz this week was relatively easy and i was able to do it.Looking forward to working a bit more on this course this weekend and learning more next week.

CSC165 - Week 9

This week was very stressful for me mainly because of the midterm. My test was on Wednesday, and i did everything possible, read assignment solutions, went through all the proofs in the course notes, lectures and the tutorial.I was very confident before giving my test and i think i did well on it except for the second question which was so tough but i tried to do it but not really sure whether it will be right or not.Above all i did better than the first one !

In this weeks lectures we learned about the big oh,and i found these proofs a bit difficult than the previous ones.I think i have to go to Danny's office hours this week to completely understand this.

Then came the tutorial which was so tough indeed,i couldn't even solve one question but fortunately understood the answers when my TA solved them. The quiz was again tough this week i just was able to understand and do half of it;i really need to work on these questions now !

CSC165 - Week 8

This week i spent most of my time doing assignment number 2,which indeed was so tough. It included every type of question possible.I was working with my friends which is fun actually, sharing ideas and knowledge and learning from each other.Question 2 was kind of easy to do but question 1 was so difficult for me especially 1.2 and 1.3,which were so tough that i was not able to even start them.Looking forward to meet my teammates and discussing these parts.

In the lectures this week we started chapter 4 and we learned insertion sort and maximum slice which i frankly didn't understand much ,can't wait to attend the tutorial and ask all the questions.

I got my quiz back this week ,which i actually did good but this weeks quiz was apparently tough though. We have another midterm next week and the test will be from the proofs;i am worried a lot since i didn't do well in the first one so i want to do better on this one!

CSC165 - Week 7

As the week 7 started,we continued with a little bit of more proofs, but now they were getting really hard. The problem that i face while writing proofs is that i can't think what to do after writing the assume and the "pick' statement. We practiced a lot of proofs in lectures and i think, now i am pretty much confident about how proofs work. They can get a bit tough sometimes but now i enjoy doing them. The feeling that i get after solving a proof is great, even though i know its not at all a big deal but yeah its fun.

Then the tutorial was posted ,and i practiced on the questions posted and i thought that i got the 2nd one right but indeed i didn't.The TA solved the questions in the tutorial and i found out the mistake in my answer.

After the tutorial,we had a quiz which i think i did decently;looking forward to learning something new next week!

CSC165 - WEEK 6

This week we got our test back and i was surprised to see that the class average was so high.I didn't get good marks in the test,i'm very disappointed about it.i think the reason for that was that i didn't study enough or maybe because i was sick as well.Well what can i say right now is that i will try to do better in the next term.

in this weeks lecture we started off with some new topics such as floor and definitions. i found definitions very hard, they are really long and hard to remember.we didn't had a tutorial this week so was not able to practice on the proof questions.the problem that i face with the proofs is that i'm not able to start the proving process.i guess i gotta talk to the professor or my TA about it.

CSC 165 - Week 5

This week we had a midterm, for which i was totally freaking out because it was my first midterm and i constantly had a feeling in the heart that its gonna be difficult.I practiced the sample term test ,read all the slides but even after that i wasn't sure.

Then came the term test day:The test was not that difficult. It was kind of similar to the term test.i think i will get a good mark on it.The question that i found difficult was the last question.it was similar to the one in assignment but i think i did it wrong

Coming on to the Lectures:This weeks lectures were pretty short because of the term test.we did proofs again such as backward proof ,direct proof etc.
Tutorial:

In this weeks tutorial we practiced the structure of the proofs which was kind of easy to understand and right after was the quiz which was easy as well.Happy Thanksgiving !

CSC 165 - WEEK 4

This week totally shook me up when i got to know that i have a assignment due AND we have a midterm as well.

In the lectures we learned bi-implications and all the equivalencies associated with it .I liked the concept of breaking up of bi-impliction into disjunctions of two conjunction and vice - versa.

Then we started with the topic of proofs, which is a really broad topic but Danny explained it so well that i learned most of it in the lecture itself and the rest i practiced back in my residence.
The tutorial was fine this week ,it wasn't that difficult. The thing which was difficult was the one due the next day i.e Assignment 1.Above all i managed to do assignment 1 and was able to submit it in time.

CSC 165 - WEEK 3

We started off the week with a bit more elements of mathematics such as conjunctions and disjunctions which were kind of easy to understand and work with and then  afterwards we continued doing negations, with which; i think i am comfortable right now.then came the topic of scope and truth tables.

Danny explained the topic of truth tables with examples which made the whole concept of truth tables clear to me.After that we practiced some of the questions based on truth table.Personally i found the topic of truth tables very interesting. Then came the most important topic of them all which was De Morgan's Law which is used extensively in a lot of places.

CSC165 - Week 2

As the second week started i was pretty confident of knowing all the matter of first week and was excited to got to the class on monday. We started off with learning universal/existential duality which taught us how to verify/falsify universal/existential claims. After that came the topic of symbols which was kind of challenging to me but it was ok this time  as i understood how to convert the english sentences into symbols or vice versa. Then came implication , in which i got confused a bit but eventually i got to know some about it , i still got some problems with implication which i have written down and will ask these questions to my TA in the tutorial. Then came negation and contrapositive which i fully understood. Then i enjoyed finding the P and Q in the sentences example: "if nominated,i will not stand".After that along the week i learned vacuous truth, equivalence and idioms as well.I have some misunderstandings with some of the topics and i'm looking forward to discuss them with my TA.

CSC 165 - Week 1

Csc 165 is a course that I didn't fully understand the content of originally, but slowly and steadily everything started to fall in place. After the first lecture, I got to know that it might be challenging but it will be fun as this course combines both math and CS. In the first week I learnt how we can build Sets in python which I found relatively easy. We then had to work on questions to explain what each given function says about the given relationship between 2 sets; these were the question which were challenging to me at first but after reading over them again I fully understood the topic. Next came the topic of Universal Claims and Existential Claims. I realised that this is the exact same topic that I did in Math; it's all interconnected! I am happy that by the end of the week I knew every topic very well and was confident to attend the lecture on Monday again. I had my tutorial on Tuesday, which I was very excited about because I knew that the small class size would mean more interaction with the TA. I'm glad I attended the tutorial since doing questions myself before class and then doing them again with the TA cleared all my little doubts. Finally, we did the quiz which was based on what we were taught the first week. Therefore, the quiz was quite simple for me to complete. Now I'm looking forward to learn new things this week and write about it on my blog next week.
